Abstract

With the appearance of virtual communities on the Internet, places of remote communication appeared, as well as spaces for generation of theoretical content on digital art. This article presents the first virtual spaces formed by digital artists in the United States of America and in Europe throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The work is based on the concept of “networking as art, networks that create art”, delving into the relevance of the content generated in these communication channels for the history of art. Through media archeology methods, we study the context in which these digital communication platforms emerged and the way in which participants generate artistic and historical archive content through private email conversations, forum discussions, conferences and virtual exhibitions.
