Perpaus ardatza duten euskal perpaus erlatiboak

Abstract

This paper aims to show that Basque relative clauses are less restricted than it is commonly claimed. One of the restrictions mentioned in the literature is that sentential relative clauses, which are possible in other languages (e.g. “She gave us the evening off, which was a bit of a surprise”, “Nos dio la noche libre, lo que/lo cual fue una sorpresa”, “Elle nous a donné une soirée libre, ce qui était un peu une surprise”, etc.), are not an option in Basque. This article will demonstrate that such a restriction does not correspond to reality and will show what types of sentential relative clauses exist in that language.
