Abstract

In this paper we start with a result of several empirical studies conducted by the author, the Spanish Internet self-ideological positions are significantly more left than the general population. From this evidence, we raise two issues. First, what causes this and, secondly, what effect this may have been on the practice of digital democracy. To answer these questions, we proceed as follows. First, we present a brief state of the question of digital democracy and its implications for democratic practices. Second, we analyze the ideological positioning to the internet and compare it to the general population. Third, through various statistical tests show the reasons for which that over-representation of the internet users left. Finally, taking as reference the theoretical debate and empirical evidence, speculate about the effects of this.
