Abstract

Ever since Mitxelena (1981) proposed that all Basque dialects had their starting point in an éuscaro to be set in the 5th-6th centuries, many contributions have been made aiming at the reconstruction of its linguistic traits. In this paper, starting from Hualde’s (2015: 131) well-known diagram, the external aspects of the problem will be discussed. By means of correlations between historical and linguistic elements, an attempt will be made to link Old Common Basque and Common Western Basque to historical processes. The relationship between Old Common Basque and Aquitanian will also be taken up.
