Abstract
This paper discusses the results of a survey on reading habits we carried out during the academic year 1989-1990. The subjects of the survey were high school students who were at that time taking classes conducted in Basque in the autonomous regions of the Basque Country and Navarre. Given that reading plays a very important role in current Literary Criticism, we wanted to give a new orientation to the study of Basque Literature by attempting to elucidate the characteristics of the real literature reader and his/her correspondence with the prefigured reader (ideal reader in Iser's terminology) in the work. Despite the limitations imposed by the corpus, we believe our conclusions to be valid in the sense that they shed some light on some frequently posed questions. Preference for narrative genres, the significant role of the reader's sex and mother tongue, as well as the poor reception of translations are some ofthe results yielded by our survey.
