Resumen

This article presents a new critical edition of the doctrine Viva Jesus. Unlike Koldo Mitxelena's 1954 edition, this one is based on the original published doctrine and includes a facsimile edition at the end. The article also offers a study of the language of the text as a support and conclusion of the edition. The introduction is followed by the analysis of the spelling, which shows the influence that the printing may have exerted on the text, and this is then compared to other printed Basque texts with the aim of proving the weaknesses of the characteristics that Vinson used when dating the doctrine. The third part of the article describes the most remarkable features of VJ's language, and the fourth part compares those features to other testimonies found in the western dialects (those of Biscay and Alava) at the same period, trying to locate the doctrine historically and geographically and find the author's origin. At the end, the article offers a critical edition of the doctrine, which, being critical, is not limited to the transcription of the original: we have compared it to the copy provided by Vinson and to the edition proposed by Mitxelena, marking those passages where the readings do not coincide and giving what each version propounds. Furthermore, we have provided a glossary of the doctrine as well as a conjugation table.
