Resumen

The dialectal variety of Soule has its own clearly differentiated place within the group of Basque tongues. Situated in the far northeast of the Basque Country, its geographical position has had a decisive influence on its distinctive personality. On top of this came the administrative reorganisation of 1926, which resulted in this province being separated from those of Labourd and Basse-Navarre.
Despite all this, however, several characteristics regarded as specific to Souletin are also in fact repeated tn Roncalese and to the varieties of Mixe (=Amikuze) and Bardos, and even, though to a lesser extent, in other tongues of Eastern Basse-Navarre and in Salazarese. It is precisely these varieties that constitute in our opinion what we have termed the Eastern dialectal nucleus.
