Abstract

In 2001, the filmmaker Víctor Erice published the script of La promesa de Shanghái, adaptation of Juan Marsé´s novel El embrujo de Shanghái. This article analyzes the contributions and variations through the transformation of the literary text into filmic text, where the number of musical pieces on the second one, all of them non-existing on the first one, draws attention. Through the analysis of the adaptation strategies developed, plus its confrontation with the common techniques in literature-film adaptation processes, this survey reaches novel conclusions about the use of the musical element in the transformation of literary material into film.
