Abstract
The Spanish municipal elections of April 14, 1931 entailed the change from monarchy to republic and a profound change in municipal administrations. In Manresa (Catalonia), that point meant the rise of the left-wing parties to municipal government and, in education, important economic efforts to improve the educational status of the city. Under the new republican laws and Catalan Generalitat, there was a significant advance on renewed pedagogical teaching. Franco's victory in 193, involved the purge of the teachers who had been prominent in most educational renewal tasks and produced an educational decline that lasted for most of the dictatorship period.
