Abstract
This text proposes to consider objects and the material dimension as key elements in constructing subjectivities. Starting from the problematisation of an essentialist view of identities in the field of sociology, and taking as empirical base three cases of bodily practices with objects, we analyse how these intimate entanglements with everyday objects are used to negotiate and reconstruct (trans)identities, both in private and in public. To account for how we construct bodies through material acts, we progressively unfold three situations of alliance with objects —a razor, a jacket and some earrings— that we identify with successive moments of vulnerability, recognition and rootedness. These socio-technical assemblages involve the activation of a multiple and distributed relational agency between humans and non humans that contributes to the establishment of more habitable collective resistances to the rigidity of gender norms.
