Abstract

The history of the valley of Roncal, handwritten by the Roncalese Juan Martin Hualde in 1630, is not widely known. Concerning the Basque language, it provides valuable information about some dialectal forms, the prestige of some varieties, predication in Basque, and the sociolinguistic situation. Moreover, it deals with the origin and extension of the Basque language from an apologetical viewpoint typical at that time. However, it defends the purity of Roncalese Basque from a gothicist approach, which is uncommon among the apologists of Basque. In this work, I comment on all these aspects, and I study in detail the author’s biography.
