Abstract

El verbo regular vascongado del dialecto vizcaíno (1848) by Friar Juan Mateo de Zavala, is not only the first grammar to have been published on the Biscayan variety of Basque, but also, from our point of view, one of the most valuable studies ever made on the Basque language as a whole.
Zavala had direct knowledge of both the Biscayan variety in all its forms, and practically everything published until then on the remaining varieties of Basque, and his work offers the present-day researcher extremely interesting data on the state of Biscayan in the last century. This essay's principal aim is to analyse this data, comparing it with previous and subsequent phases in the evolution of Biscayan.
