Resumen

Here we publish the text of a translation of the Catechism of Astete into the dialect of Gipuzkoa, made in 1759 by Francisco Antonio Aguirre, the parish priest of Oikia; the text has remained practically unknown to scholars of Basque, despite the appearance in 1905-1906 of the faulty first edition, published by Julio de Urquijo. We show that the general oblivion into which the text has fallen does not do justice to its great interest for the study of the dialectology and history of the language, and particularly for those researching into the influence of Larramendi and the constitution of literary Gipuzkoan (a subject that has started to receive more and more attention in recent Basque philological literature). The remarkable things about it are the number of first appearances of words not borrowed from Spanish, the use of derivative suffixes, and the influence of Eastern linguistic models, reinforcing the conclusions of Sarasola (1986) on the influence of Larramendi.
