Abstract

In Valderredible, primary education was scarce in the 18th century, with some charitable schools, but the Constitution of 1812 and the Primary Instruction Law of 1838 attempted to expand it. Although literacy improved since 1912, child labor and rural idiosyncrasies limited attendance. During Primo de Ribera's dictatorship, thirteen schools were created, but the republican network was drastically reduced in Valderredible. The museumization of the old school in Castrillo de Valdelomar highlights the importance of rural education, honoring the work of teachers and the community. The recreation of an old classroom and the exhibition of objects convey the importance of education in community development to present and future generations.
