Abstract

The article presents a starting point for a profound
reconsideration of the opposition between the concepts
of "Community" and "Society" developed by
Ferdinand Tönnies, an opposition which has since become
a central point of reference in sociological theory.
The article will explore the multiple and sometimes
contradictory meanings of the two concepts as
introduced in Tönnies' main work Gemeinschaft und
Gesellschaft (1887) and their successive elaborations.
