In this article, some basic concepts of the Theory of Lexical Phonology are summarized and discussed using for the most part evidence from Basque and the Ibero-Romance languages. In the first section, arguments are presented for establishing extrinsic order relations among phonological rules and also between different phonological rules and morphological processes. In section two, some of the main properties that distinguish between lexical and postlexical rule applications are reviewed. Finally, in section three, some interesting aspects of the interaction between the phonological and morphological components in Basque are examined.
