Abstract

It has been a long time since Basque dialectologists investigated, from a synchronic point of view, a whole series of vowel interaction phenomena grouped under the name of euphonies. However, the investigation of the history of these phenomena has been relegated among Basque diachronists due, among other reasons, to the fact that they are relatively modern and do not allow us to reconstruct prehistoric stages. In this paper, I present the historical evolution of epenthetic -ubV, an innovation that emerged in the Old Basque period. Specifically, I have analyzed the first testimonies, the texts and places where it is documented, and the historical trends of its use, taking into account both folk varieties and the printed and canonical written tradition.
