Abstract
Is critical art in public space still possible today, or has the institutional absorbed all urban artistic insurrection? This text reflects on how certain subversive artistic practices that used to take place in public space have been absorbed by the institutional in such a way that they have somehow been ‘domesticated’. The institution, acting as a patron, uses art in the public space to create a new tourist resource that it disguises as a new element of identity; 2. The popular ends up imposing itself; 3. Illegal artistic practices are accepted; 4. The institutional public monuments of yesteryear are ignored by the institutions, but become icons of the public, changing their original sense of identity and their significance. We analyse how these practices modify the relationship between public space and citizenship, delving into how time changes perception and social dynamics.
