Abstract

The large cabinet drawers from the first Children’s House is the highlight of the collection of the Museo della Scuole e dell’Educazione ‘Mauro Laeng’ of the University of Roma Tre with regard to the Montessori method. Reconstructing the biography of this piece of furniture shows the importance of deepening the study of the material culture of the Montessori school. The research done so far with sources of different types has shown that it is probably a prototype: this helps to understand the evolution of Maria Montessori’s thinking with regard to the environment and the meaning of furniture that is truly prepared for the child.
