Abstract

The development of career guidance in Europe during the first quarter of the 20th century finds its reciprocity in the province of Santander thanks to the enormous contribution of the teacher and journalist Jesús Revaque Garea, prime mover of the establishment of the Institute of Professional Guidance of Santander, head of the Office of Guidance and Professional Selection created after the publication of the 1928 Statute of Vocational Training and promoter from the first moment, through his articles in the local press and his interventions in different forums, of the advantages involved in the improvement of the productivity and well-being of the working class that s the choice of the profession or trade based on skills and professional selection implies. This paper, which will be complemented by a subsequent paper of the informative work of Revaque, describes both the different stages in the comprehensive regulation of vocational training in Spain and the atmosphere and circumstances in which the first institutional experience aimed at improving students and apprentices’ career guidance originated in the city of Santander.
