Critical nostalgias in ‘emergent’ Spanish painting

Abstract
In the first part of this text, we aim to underscore the significance of nostalgia, understood not only as a psychological and individual emotion but also as a cultural and collective phenomenon. We contend that nostalgia, like any other emotion, can be expressed and aprehended through cultural creations. Building on this premise, we will analyse the work of several ‘emerging’ Spanish painters to explore not only the ways in which nostalgia is articulated in visual Arts, but also how these artists are able to render it more complex, revealing a critical dimension that challenges simplistic interpretations that portray the emotion as regressive, overly sentimental, or impoverishing.
